The nose shows red grapefruit, ripe honeydew melon, orange peel, and lime notes that leads into flint, chalk, wet crushed stone, and a fleshy and round mouthfeel. The wine has a soft and elegant finish that just wont stop. Producer Information Known as the highest winery in Mendoza, Zorzal is a relatively small, minimal-intervention winery, founded in 2007, and based in Gualtallary, in the Uco Valley subregion. Zorzal produces a range of wines from its 70-hectare (172-acre) vineyard, producing a range of wines including the regional workhorse, Malbec, as well as cooler-climate varieties such as Pinot Noir, Cabernet Franc and Mencia. Classic Bordeaux varieties including Cabernet Sauvignon, Sauvignon Blanc and Semillon are also produced, as is Chardonnay. Wines are made with minimal intervention (including indigenous fermentation) with some cuves fermented in egg these latter are generally released under the “Eggo” moniker. According to winemaker Juan Pablo Michelini, Zorzal makes wines “with minimal oenological intervention that fully express the characteristics of this unique place in the world”. The estate was founded by fomer banker Gerardo Michelini, alongside brothers Matias and Juan Pablo, with the latter two covering winemaking duties for the brand. Gerardo has also branched out with partner and winemaker Andrea Mufatto and their son, Manu, into Bierzo, Spain, producing the Michelini i Mufatto wines in Toral de Merayo, just outside Ponferrada. Zorzal Vineyards & Winery should not be confused with Via Zorzal in Navarra, northeastern Spain.
